Dave Reid

Clarinet, Soprano Sax

Raised in the Chicago area, Dave was influenced by and performed with many great jazz musicians, including the Bill Russo Band and the Chez Paree Orchestra.  He earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music from Northwestern University and, upon graduation, accepted a band teaching position in the Fairfax County, VA School system where he led his school jazz bands to outstanding success.   While in the DC area, Dave performed with many of the great service band musicians, including Sammy Nestico, Dave Wolpe and Dave Steinmeyer.  Upon retirement from teaching, he settled in the Winston-Salem, NC area where he performs with many jazz groups including the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra.

Dwight Spencer

Banjo, Guitar

An accomplished freelance guitarist, composer, clinician, studio musician and Assistant Professor of Worship and Guitar at Liberty University, Dwight has performed numerous shows and theatrical productions on guitar, mandolin, banjo, and ukulele, including live shows with The Letterman, Scott Record, Louise Bellson, The Platters, the Skyliners, Bucky Pizzarelli, the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival.  He has recorded with Maurice Williams (Zodiacs), Dennis Williams (Temptations) and is featured on many film and show soundtracks.   Dwight holds a Master’s in Jazz Studies from the University of South Carolina.

Jay Lineberry

Trumpet

Jay is a versatile trumpeter who is well-known in the Piedmont Triad and throughout the Carolinas. He was a featured soloist with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory for ten years, and can be heard on recordings released by that organization.  In addition to his talent and passion for traditional jazz, Jay also  has a fondness for jazz from the big band era.  Jay's collection of the music of Harry James is perhaps one of the world's largest, comprising well over 120 hours of material.

Steve Griggs

Tuba, Helicon

Steve is founder and leader of the VCJB. Performing on his vintage 1918 helicon, he provides a driving traditional jazz bass line under the band. Steve founded his first traditional jazz band, The Vintage Red Dixieland Band, while attending Indiana University. During summer breaks, the band performed at Six Flags, Atlanta, GA and Opryland USA, Nashville, TN.  Relocating to Tulsa, OK after college, Steve founded and led the Tulsa Vintage Jazz Band (1982-2001).  He has performed with traditional jazz bands from St. Louis to New Orleans, San Diego to Columbia, SC, where he founded the VCJB in 2002.
